The kid from southwest Sydney
Like many people that have grown up in the South Western suburbs of Sydney, Curtis Noah came from a broken home…
But unlike so many of these people, he made a decision to break the cycle while using his many talents to show us that anything is possible.
Born to Lianne Tomas and Bruce Allen on the 2nd of June 1986
Curtis’s parents were no longer together when he was born & by the time he was the age of 3, it was established his mother was unable to care for him properly. As a result, he was taken in by his Grandparents not too long after they would move to England to a place called Slough, approximately 20 miles to the west of London. A place that Curtis describes as “Pretty much the Burbs”, he lived here until the age of 8 when he then moved back to Australia with his Grandparents.
After experiencing a lot of problems in school & always getting into trouble, Curtis was shipped off to live with his father at the age of 12.
Curtis’s father has been linked to numerous underground bands and just like his son… Bruce is an all-rounder, composing, playing and producing his own music from his group’s label “Wet Dog Records” in Brunswick, Melbourne. He is also known to be a bit of a beast on a drum kit. Together they lived in a warehouse that housed a 32-channel digital recording studio.
This situation gave “Promisques” the rare opportunity to be exposed to many styles of music & learn music production and the art of performing through experience. At the tender age of 12, he made his first beat on Sony Acid Pro. (A P.C. program designed for making beats). Curtis was attending the Sydney Rd Community College in Melbourne, which at the time consisted of around 96 kids. This school is music based and Curtis appeared as the year 7 & 8 drummer. During this time he performed at every end-of-school term presentation playing covers of popular music.
After moving to the Central Coast with his father, 1 week after his 15th birthday Curtis was forced to start a new kind of life. Leaving home, he was left to live a life on the streets while house-jumping. Using his experiences as inspiration for his music Curtis took every opportunity he was given to write and record his work. In 2005 at the age of 18 Curtis received his first big break when “Parkside” a Central Coast youth group heard his reputable style & requested he appears on their upcoming album raising money for their centre. Soon after his album appearance Curtis landed a real “gig” supporting one of the Australian rap super-groups “The Herd”. As Curtis gained more rep and acknowledgements of his ability, it opened the door for him to work alongside well known Aussie artists such as Joel Turner, Phrase, Illy, Kerser, Pez & 360 etc.
In 2006 Curtis created Notorious Records.
Producing and recording from his home studio, from there on he threw himself into his music. The release of his mix tape “The Re-Birth” in 2008 had many artists and fans talking about his vocal styles, some claiming that his style is reminiscent of the great Eazy E others stating “He sounds like an Aussie Madchild”. The reaction to his release gave Curtis the inspiration to relentlessly work on his sounds, recording around 80 songs and counting, many still unreleased.
Curtis said on the release of his mix tape “I was really happy with the reaction I got off this project, the listeners were really feeling it. Which in return makes me keen to get to work on the next project”.
After the release of his next project “Notorious Radio volume 1 mix tape” featuring good friend “Devonne”. Curtis continued his journey into the Aussie hip hop world by entering into the 1out street battles in Melbourne…
The Pineapple Express tournament. Becoming an instant hit and surprising all those who witnessed his masterful manipulation of the English language. His wins in the Pineapple Express allowed him entry into the “Grind Time Now Aust” league where he also won his battle with ease.
During the preparation of these battles, Promisques was working on many different projects, including two feature spots on Hyjak’s solo album “Straight Jak” and creating his LP “The Southwest District”, featuring collaborations with DJ A.$.K, Hyjak, Devonne & international artists Amun Ra & Menace.
The release of his L.P. “The Southwest Districts” was taken to by fans with open ears…
Promisques has performed electrifying live shows and he sends the crowds into a frenzy every time he hits the stage.
Much to the disappointment of various record labels that have approached him, Curtis still remains staunchly independent. Choosing to focus solely on developing his own unique homegrown sound, not a commercialized version of what he has been paid to spew out, making all the difference to his selection of released tracks.
Promisques is proving to be one of Australia’s most prolific artists…
Gaining sponsorship in the process with Unique Ink Gosford & Illegal Merch, Curtis has also received interest from other labels & brands.
Promisques is responsible for the most part…Recording, mixing, mastering, Filming, video editing, Graphic designs & Website development/maintenance making him a true jack of all trades.
